Nigeria’s Dangote Cement has applied for a licence to build, own and operate a 75MW captive power plant, to be fed by coal from the Mbinga mine in south-west Tanzania. It will supply Dangote’s $500m 3m t/yr Mtwara cement factory, which is under construction, the Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (Ewura) announced. Often described as Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote agreed to invest an undisclosed sum to develop the mine during a meeting with Tanzanian vice-president Mohammed Gharib Bilal in October.
