The European Commission has agreed to provide a grant of around €30m to the African Development Bank (AfDB) for a 225kV interconnection project between Cameroon and Chad. The deal was agreed on 20 December but only announced in January. The interconnection project involves a 700km line from Ngaoundéré to Maroua in Cameroon and on to N’Djaména in Chad and a second 250km line connecting Maroua to Mogrom in Chad and then completing the loop at N’Djaména. A rural electrification project will add local communities to the grid along the transmission line route. It is expected to cost €399m and the AfDB committed in December 2017 to finance 65% of the cost. The development finance institution first approved support for the project in 2013, financing a preliminary study. The new line is scheduled to begin operating in 2022. It is being implemented by the regional power pool, the Pool Energétique de l’Afrique Centrale.
