Nuclear power in Africa

Nuclear power in Africa
Issue 497
31 July 2024

Revised July 2024, this map illustrates the current state of the nuclear power industry across Africa.

The map is shaded to show countries with operating nuclear reactors, nuclear reactors under construction and those where nuclear reactors are planned or under assessment.

The location of operating plants in Egypt and South Africa are shown along with sites across the continent where plants are under construction, planned and where research reactors are already operating.

The map also shows the location of uranium mines and projects that are operating, under care and maintenance or are considered potential, planned or under development.

Around the map three small charts provide some context, illustrating worldwide operating nuclear power capacity (2000-22), uranium spot prices (2019-June 2024) and African uranium production (2013-22).

The map is presented as a PDF file using eps graphics, meaning that there is no loss of resolution as the file is enlarged.
