This map provides an overview of operating biomsss power plants across Africa. Projects are shown by type (biomass only, biomass/coal, and biomass/waste-to-energy) and connection (on-grid, off-grid and embedded) with different sized circles to show sites of 3-9MW, 10-29MW, 30-99MW and 100MW+.
Text panels provide notes for key projects, while a pie chart shows a breakdown of operating capacity by region in July 2023.
An inset shows in greater detail the location of projects from southern Mozambique to the area south of Durban in South Africa.
Power generation data was drawn from our African Energy Live Data platform, which contains project level detail on power plants and projects across Africa.
The map is presented as a PDF file using eps graphics, meaning that there is no loss of resolution as the file is enlarged.
