The countries of North Africa have some of the world’s richest renewable resources thanks to high solar radiation, the space to install large quantities of panels and in places some of the highest quality wind on earth. Together with its proximity to European markets, these advantages have inspired schemes ranging from a multi-gigawatt wind and solar project, plus an HVDC export line from Morocco to the UK, Egypt’s various power interconnection plans with Saudi Arabia, Europe and sub-Saharan Africa and Tunisia’s interconnections with Italy, plus a rapid proliferation of speculative green (and blue) hydrogen schemes. The dominant theme is the development of massive export-led projects and related interconnections.

These huge projects financial and commercial structures are closely analogous with major oil and gas developments of the past: they will require massive up-front private sector capital commitment and internationally-owned proprietary technology, not just in production but related infrastructure such as HVDC transmission interconnections and hydrogen and ammonia facilities.

Jon Marks – a political scientist with a deep understanding of energy markets and the politics of North Africa – will lead a discussion of the region’s power market prospects and the issues investors and developers need to understand to manage the region’s volatile political and security risks.

The webinar will examine the opportunities for investors and developers emerging from power generation programmes and surplus electricity production.

Participants will also benefit from slides illustrating North Africa’s energy mix and regional power generation trends, based on the most recent data from our industry-leading African Energy Live Data platform.

Panellists:

  • Jon Marks, Founder and editorial director, African Energy
  • John Hamilton, Senior Analyst North Africa, African Energy and Managing Director, CbI
  • Adel Baba-Aissa, Investment Director, Meridiam
