South Africa: Concerns over Thabametsi emissions

The argument over the environmental impact of the 557.3MW Thabametsi coal power plant, one of two projects selected as part of South Africa’s coal baseload independent power procurement programme on 10 October 2016, continues to rage after Earthlife Africa Johannesburg submitted comments on the final climate change impact assessment (CCIA) for the project on 31 July. Earthlife won a High Court case on 8 March forcing environmental affairs minister Bomo Edna Molewa to include the impact Thabametsi will have on climate change as part of its environmental authorisation.
