Independent power company Copperbelt Energy Corporation has invited expressions of interest by 19 November for an engineering, procurement and construction contract to develop the 40MW Kabompo Gorge hydroelectric scheme in north-west Zambia. The power company, which supplies electricity to mines in the Copperbelt province, said it plans to issue invitations for bids from pre-qualified bidders in March 2011.

Ukrainian hydro engineering company Ukrhydroproject has completed studies showing the potential for a system of 14 hydropower plants with a combined installed capacity of 720MW on the River Wele. The hydro plants would be constructed in two stages alongside a 110kV transmission system linking them to the major load centres, according to the company. The cascade could generate up to 5TWh per year, it said.

NuPlanet wins mini-hydro licence

South African developer NuPlanet has been awarded a generation licence by the Zimbabwe Energy Regulation Council to build a 5MW hydropower plant at the Mutirikwi dam, Zimbabwe’s largest reservoir. Technical feasibility and environmental impact assessments for the Mutirikwi project would start next year, with procurement, contracting and construction to commence thereafter, managing director Anton-Louis Olivier said on 1 November.
