Sinohydro to build Kariba South

Zimbabwe’s State Procurement Board (SPB) has finally awarded the tender for the 300MW Kariba South Power Station extension to Sinohydro, the Zimbabwe Herald reported. The daily paper said the Chinese company had bid about $368m for the contract, which was just over half of the $700m agreed with the Treasury in a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed in 2010.

Bids in for Hwange expansion

Zimbabwe Power Company (ZPC) is evaluating bids for the expansion of Hwange Power Station units 7 and 8 following a 5 June deadline for final bids. A total of 11 bidders have prequalified for the expansion of the Hwange and Kariba South plants, but no date has been set for final bids for Kariba.

Tariffs rise by 31%

The Zimbabwe Electricity Regulatory Commission (Zerc) has approved a 31% tariff increase as part of a gradual move to cost-reflective tariffs to improve cashflow for state utility Zesa Holdings.  Zerc said the average tariff would rise to 9.3 cents/kWh from 7.5 cents from 1 September.
