The World Bank board is to decide in June on financing for a $70m project to increase access to electricity. The Rwanda Electricity Access Scale-up and SWAp (sector-wide approach) Development Project will help launch a national electricity access programme and to meet the government’s target of tripling access to electricity by 2012 to about 16% of households and at least 50% of identified public institutions in health, education and local administration.

Tenders for small hydro plants

Bids for tender 082/T/2008-I/MININFRA-BTC CTB/RPPA, for the construction and the supply and installation of hydro-mechanical works for the 640kW Nkora, 300kW Cyimbili, and the two-unit 2.27MW Keya are due by 24 October

Methane pilot plants to become operational

A 4.5-5MW pilot methane plant operated by the Unit for the Promotion and Exploitation of Lake Kivu Gas (Upegaz) should be operational by year-end, according to Electrogaz engineers, providing electricity to the national grid (AE 112/6).
