The Swaziland Water Services Corporation (SWSC) has issued a request for proposals from consultancy firms by the 23 February for the development of a 5-10MW solar photovoltaic (PV) plant. Letters of intent are sought by 2 February.
The consultant will undertake feasibility studies and conceptual design work; carry out a transmission and interconnection study; conduct an environmental and social impact assessment; develop an implementation plan and carry out capacity building; assist with procurement of construction contractors; work as the owner’s engineer and manage contracts. Work is expected to last until Q4 2019, when the plant is expected to commission.
SWSC uses around 30GWh/yr, which is expected to rise to 32GWh/yr as new water stations come online. According to the utility, electricity is the single highest input cost driver in the water supply. As a result, SWSC is looking to develop a solar plant on a 158ha site adjacent to the existing Matsapha waste water treatment plant.
