Ethiopian Electric Power announced on 23 March that 12 developers have been prequalified to build two solar projects with up to 125MW capacity. 28 bids were submitted for the tender, which is part of the Scaling Solar programme in the country. The prequalified bidders are: Access and Total Eren; Acciona and Swicorp; Actis and Mulilo; Acwa Power; Al-Nowais, Aldwych, and Alten; Electricité de France and Masdar; Enel green Power; Fotowatio Renewable Ventures, Globeleq, and Belayab; Ideun Tech and Korea Electric Power Corporation (Kepco); Mitsui; Nareva and Adani; and Scatec Solar.

Scaling Solar is an International Finance Corporation (IFC) led programme to introduce utility scale solar independent power producers to countries which have not yet developed their solar resources. Construction recently began on one of the first projects procured through the programme, 47.5MW Bagweulu in Zambia, and six bidders were prequalified to build a 25MW solar plant in Madagascar last month. A second tender is underway in Zambia for up to 300MW and proposals were submitted by prequalified bidders in Senegal in February as part of a tender to build 200MW solar power.
