After COP26, is the writing on the wall for gas-fired projects?

Issue 450 - 23 Nov 2021

The issue leads with an examination of the COP26 outcomes, with a focus on the future role of gas, and presents an illustrated analysis of new H1 2021 power sector data released by African Energy Live Data.

Power features include a look at Tunisia, where the Saied administration is expected to push ahead with its renewable power procurement programme, despite significant constitutional, legal and political barriers.

A feature also focuses on transmission, with industry stakeholders calling for change of approach to close the ‘transmission deficit’.

Upstream coverage leads with DR Congo – also the focus of the African Energy View – where the government sees considerable investment upside, despite the outlook for hydrocarbons looking very different from a decade ago. Oil and gas coverage also includes a focus on Egypt, which is looking to ease terms for oil firms in attempt to secure upstream investment.

Finance and policy coverage leads with Guinea, where Colonel Mamady Doumbouya’s cabinet has been presented by his regime as bringing technocrats into key positions to improve the government’s performance, but critics say ministers are either too ‘apolitical’ to enact genuine change, or compromised by past business dealings.  There is also an exmaination  – with new map – of Ethiopia's civil war.
