Further details of a project to introduce batteries to the grid, which earlier this year replaced a previous donor-funded project to build the 100MW Kiwano concentrated solar power scheme, have been released with publication of the environmental and social management framework. The project will be implemented in two phases, with 800MWh of distributed battery storage to be installed at various sites in four provinces by December 2019 in the first phase.

Madagascar has commissioned its first integrated solar photovoltaic (PV) and storage facility. The project, which will serve the village of Belobaka, in the Bongolava region, about 290km from Antananarivo, was inaugurated on 27 October by President Hery Rajaonarimampianina. The pilot project, which comprises 720 PV modules as well as batteries with a storage capacity of 315kWh, was installed by local energy group Henri Fraise Fils & Cie in partnership with the US-based battery storage manufacturer Fluidic Energy, which supplied the integrated energy storage system.

State power and water utility Office National de l’Electricité et de l’Eau Potable (ONEE) will launch tenders this year for technical studies for the construction of two new 300MW pumped storage facilities, El Menzel II, located on the upper Sebou River, and Ifahsa, in the north of the country. The daily Le Matin reported that El Menzel II would be developed at a site 35km from Sefrou, while Ifahsa would be located on the right bank of the Oued Laou River, about 14km from the town of Chefchaouen.

Eritrea is seen as one of Africa’s tougher jurisdictions, but this has not stopped the EU’s European Development Fund (EDF) committing to finance an innovative photovoltaic (PV) solar power system, involving energy storage using batteries. An Italian consortium led by Enertronica, in partnership with Rossi Impianti, has won a tender to design and build the plant. Terms of the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract, which is valued at around €1m, are to be finalised with the government over the coming months, Enertronica project manager Antonio Bonanni told African Energy.

Office National de l’Electricité et de l’Eau Potable has published notice of prequalification for the 350MW Abdelmoumen pumped storage project in Taroudant Province. The turnkey contract will include implementation studies, civil works, materials and equipment supply, installation, testing and commissioning of the power plant.

Office National de l’Electricité (ONE) has issued a tender (SP 465 985) for the turnkey installation of a new coal storage area at Jorf Lasfar, where Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (Taqa)-owned Jorf Lasfar Energy Company 5&6 is expanding the coal-fired generation complex.
