Benin: Energicity completes two mini-grids

Energicity has announced the completion of two mini-grids, at Takpatchiomè and Gougouta in the Couffo department. Energicity was awarded a construction, operation and maintenance contract for 20 mini-grids in the Zou, Couffo and Collines departments under the Off-Grid Clean Energy Facility (OCEF), one of five concessionaires to sign deals.

Supermajor Shell has acquired Nigerian commercial and industrial (C&I) developer Daystar Power for an undisclosed sum. The Lagos-headquartered firm’s co-founders and management team will remain in situ. Daystar also announced plans to expand into southern and eastern African markets.

South African schools turn to solar energy

Schools have joined an increasing number of electricity users turning to alternatives to state utility Eskom as the energy crisis continues to take its toll in South Africa. As many as 41 schools in Western Cape province, with a combined capacity of 25.87MW, have applied to the Ministry of Education for connection to distributed solar PV systems.

The Economic Committee of West African States (Ecowas) inaugurated the Nigeria segment of its regional off-grid electricity access project (Rogeap) in Abuja on 19 July. The project, which was initially launched in 2017, was restructured with additional financing and relaunched in 2020.
