Ghana: IFC announces Takoradi loan

The World Bank’s International Finance Corporation has announced an $80m loan to the Takoradi International Company (Tico), to part-finance the 110MW expansion of its Takoradi II gas-fired power plant (AE 236/8). Tico is 90% owned by Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (Taqa), with the other 10% held by Volta River Authority.

The African Development Bank (AfDB) has agreed a senior loan of €57.5m ($69.9m) through its private sector window to support the design, construction and operation of two hydroelectric projects in Gabon. Both projects will be run-of-river, with the larger 70MW Chutes de l’Impératrice built in Ngounie province and the 52MW FE2 on the Okano River in the north of the country. The AfDB is also lead debt arranger among the development finance institutions.

New World Bank support for Senelec

The World Bank has approved an $85m support package to improve performance at the Société National d’Electricité du Sénégal (Senelec) and the reliability of electricity services in greater Dakar. The $93.5m Electricity Sector Support Project will finance the upgrading of transmission and distribution lines and substations, installation of prepayment meters, and a new customer management system at the utility.
