Botswana: Jindal Steel buys CIC Energy

India’s Jindal Steel & Power has bought Mmamabula project developer CIC Energy for $116m and plans to push ahead with development of the stalled project. The deal will give Jindal Africa mining rights for high quality thermal coal from the Greater Mmamabula coalfield in south-east Botswana, which is estimated to hold 2.4bn tonnes.

Hydro plant for Kenya tea agency

Uganda: Karuma dam tender problems

The selection of a construction contractor for the delayed Karuma dam has run into trouble over claims of irregularities in the tender process. Cornelia Sabiti, executive director of the Public Procurement and Disposal of Public Assets Authority, wrote to the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development on 5 September seeking an administrative review of the 600MW project.

Rwanda: Turkish firm to build peat plant

Turkey’s Hakan Mining and Electricity Generation has signed a contract valued at $283m to begin exploiting Rwanda’s extensive peat reserves. The company will begin construction of a peat extraction facility and a 100MW peat-fired power plant within 12 to 15 months.
