The World Bank Group has agreed additional grant financing of $6m for the Power Access and Diversification Project (AE 184/14). The additional financing, on top of $7m in November 2005, will help Djibouti to expand access to electricity for low-income citizens, and to improve the efficiency of power utility Electricité de Djibouti (EDD).

The African Development Bank’s soft lending arm, the African Development Fund, has approved a combined loan and grant of $32.57m towards the cost of the Ethiopia-Djibouti interconnector (AE 123/4).

The World Bank’s International Finance Corporation and Iceland’s Reykjavik Energy Invest (REI) have signed an agreement for the exploration and development of geothermal resources at Lake Assal (AE 132/9). The agreement is the first funded by IFC InfraVentures, a new $100m fund to support development of infrastructure in the world’s poorest countries.

Iceland to back geothermal development

Iceland’s Reykjavik Energy Invest (REI) has signed an agreement with Djibouti Energy Company (DEC) to build a geothermal power plant as part of the Asal Rift Geothermal Project (ARGP). The plant is expected to start production in 2012, and will replace the present diesel-generated electricity with power from a renewable source.
