InfraCo Africa announced on 27 August that it had signed a shareholders’ agreement with PowerGen committing $6.9m to developing the Sierra Leone Mini-Grid Project. The project will build 41 solar PV, battery and diesel hybrid mini-grids, establishing 12,500 new connections. Of these, around 85% will be households and 15% small enterprises and public institutions. PowerGen was selected to implement the project following a tender run by the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), under the umbrella of the Rural Renewable Energy Project (RREP), which is funded by £35m ($43m) from the United Kingdom’s Department for International Development (DfID).

Off-grid solar company Easy Solar announced on 29 September that it has raised $3m through its series A equity round from impact investor Acumen and the Netherlands’ FMO, and $2m of debt through crowdfunding platform Trine. Easy Solar operates in Liberia and Sierra Leone. “Sierra Leone’s low electrification rates combined with limited alternatives for clean energy make Easy Solar’s business model highly relevant,” FMO venture programme manager Marieke Roestenberg said.

Off-grid solar company Solarise Africa announced on 9 February it had signed a partnership agreement with turnkey energy firm Centennial Generating Company. The deal sees Solarise Africa acquire stakes in seven projects in Rwanda, two in Zambia and one in Uganda, spread across the education, healthcare, retail, manufacturing, hospitality and agriculture sectors.

Lesotho: Mini-grid tender gets underway

The Department of Energy is inviting expressions of interest from consultants to prepare 16 mini-grids for tendering and identify a further 14 mini-grid sites. The World Bank Group’s International Development Association and the Scaling Up Renewable Energy Programme are supporting the $52.9m Lesotho Renewable Energy and Electricity Access Project (LREEAP) to increase access to electricity in rural and peri-urban areas. The project aims to extend the grid in peri-urban areas and use mini-grids in rural and remote areas.

The African Development Bank (AfDB) announced on 29 June that South Korea’s Ministry of Economy and Finance (MoEF) and the Export-Import Bank of Korea had signed an agreement to provide $600m to co-finance energy projects in Africa. It adds to the glut of funds targeting the African power sector, but oversupply of donor money – or undersupply of projects – is driving interest rates down and causing concern amongst financiers.
