Gambia is to launch a mini-licensing round for Block A1 on 8 November, less than three months after BP’s exit from the licence in early August. The Ministry of Petroleum and Energy said it was working with legal, technical and financial advisors to design the licensing round’s commercial and fiscal framework, “taking into account the current market environment”.

Gambia: FAR secures Bambo rig

Stena Drilling on 16 June announced a contract with FAR Gambia for the Stena Drillmax Ice to deliver the Bambo-1 well on Block A2, starting between 1 October and 30 November. Australian minnow FAR acquired a 50% working interest and became operator in offshore Blocks A2 and A5 in 2017, which it said were on-trend with and adjacent to the Senegalese RSSD blocks.

Construction of the 20MWp Brikama Solar PV plant is expected to start in Q4 21 and take 12 months, National Water and Electricity Company (Nawec) project co-ordinator Haddy Njie told African Energy. Spain’s AF-Mercados EMI was announced as owner’s engineer in December. Njie said implementation of the resettlement action plan was “very advanced”.

President Adama Barrow has commissioned a 20MW thermal power plant at Brikama in a ceremony on 20 February held as part of the country’s independence anniversary celebrations. The plant is an expansion of the Brikama II HFO plant, adding two MAN 9L51/60 engines. It was funded by the Islamic Development Bank, with counterpart funding from the Gambian government.

REPP invests £1m in battery supplier

The UK’S Renewable Energy Performance Platform (REPP), part of the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, on 11 December announced that it had signed an agreement to invest £1m ($1.3m) of equity in renewable-powered battery rental company Mobile Power. The investment was part of a £2m series A funding round.

Gambia: PetroNor settles arbitration

Oslo-listed PetroNor has reached an out-of-court settlement with the government of Gambia on its dispute over the licences for blocks A1 and A4. African Petroleum, which merged with PetroNor in 2019, filed an arbitration case at the International Centre for the Settlement of Investment Disputes after the government cancelled the licences and awarded A1, which lies immediately to the south of Cairn Energy’s SNE and Fan discoveries offshore Senegal, to BP.
