By 2027, almost 30% of Africa’s electricity will be generated using natural gas, a figure that rises to 45% if dual-fuel plants are included. Despite questions from some quarters over its applicability as a ‘transition fuel’, African Energy Live Data expects 18.3GW generated from natural gas to come online by 2027. However, the project pipeline to 2027 also shows that the share of the continental energy mix taken up by gas is declining in favour of a bigger role for renewables.

Gambia’s largest ever renewable IPP is being developed in a West African Power Pool initiative that is intended to boost Banjul’s efforts to move away from reliance on on-grid thermal generation. National Water and Electricity Company (Nawec) is also looking to engage with IPPs interested in developing wind plants along the coast, while electricity access will be further improved by transmission and distribution upgrades.

Chemicals producer Omnia Group has confirmed the expected timeframe for the commissioning of a second solar PV plant at Sasolburg. The additional capacity is aimed at reducing the Johannesburg-based company’s dependence on the national grid. Omnia has a memorandum of understanding with renewable energy specialist WKN Windcurrent to develop green hydrogen and ammonia production at Sasolburg.
