Energy minister Gwede Mantashe has told parliament his department aims to procure 4.2GW of renewables by January, along with ambitious plans for coal and gas power. Controversial nuclear energy plans are also moving forward in an agenda which will raise hackles as well as presenting opportunities, writes Dan Marks South Africa is aiming to start procurement of more than 9.2GW of new generation capacity by January 2022, according to a statement by mineral resources and energy minister Gwede Mantashe to the National Council of Provinces (upper house of parliament).

With elections coming up on 8 May, the power crisis in South Africa has peaked at an inconvenient time for President Cyril Ramaphosa. While opposition parties, particularly the Democratic Alliance, are seeking to make political capital out of the catastrophic deterioration in technical and financial performance at Eskom, there are also concerns that no substantial policy measures are likely until after the elections. This could have implications for policies such as the unbundling of transmission, where the government had aimed to appoint directors for a new entity around mid-year.

Zambian IPP Western Power has confirmed the timeframe for  appointing an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) partner for the construction of the 180MW Ngonye Falls hydroelectric power plant. Six international contractors led by Chinese giants Sinohydro Corporation and China Gezhouba Group Company (CGGC) have been shortlisted for the EPC job.
