Can Sisi create an energy hub in the eastern Mediterranean?

The frailty of President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi’s economic model has been exposed in the aftermath of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the country’s status as a long-term gas exporter remains unclear. To deal with this, Sisi has incentivised the development of renewable power and positioned Egypt to be a major Eastern Mediterranean energy hub.

The concept includes the import, exploitation and re-export of Cypriot and Israeli gas, plus the generation and export of green energy as electricity, GH2, green ammonia (GHN₃) and other value-added products.
