Big gas and security – getting LNG out of Mozambique

Momentum for Mozambique's LNG projects has been slowly building following Eni's export of its first LNG cargo from the troubled Cabo Delgado region in 2022.

TotalEnergies has confirmed longstanding speculation that work will resume at Mozambique LNG this year, while ExxonMobil is aiming for a final investment decision on its Rovuma project in 2025.

African Energy continues to follow the development of these key projects and the underlying security situation which caused force majeure to be triggered, following attacks by jihadist insurgents in March 2021.

Construction is expected to restart in mid-2024 at Mozambique LNG, with a revived financing package expected to be put in place after nearly three years of force majeure, and as the adjacent Rovuma LNG project is also resuming work.
