Zimbabwe: Kariba South Extension inaugurated

President Emmerson Mnangagwa on 28 March inaugurated the Kariba South Power Station Extension, adding 300MW to the national grid from new units 7 and 8. Kariba South was commissioned in 1962 with an installed capacity of 666MW and subsequently upgraded to 750MW. The extension brings its total capacity to 1,050MW. “Currently, the average maximum daily power demand is about 1,600MW, against a backdrop of an average internal generation capacity of about 1,200MW, resulting in a deficit in supply of about 600MW, which is met through importation.
