Zambia and Zimbabwe are battling the worst decline of water levels at the Lake Kariba reservoir in more than two decades, threatening the power supply of both countries. Zambia’s Zesco has warned it may have to shut down the Kariba North Bank power station due to a combination of falling water levels and rising demand. Zambia is experiencing its worst drought since 1995 and although Zesco was able to withstand the low water levels at Lake Kariba and Itezhi Tezhi 20 years ago, demand in the 1990s was far below current levels.
