Tanzania: Magufuli pursues Nyererian dreams with Rufiji hydro project

The Tanzanian government on 12 December signed an engineering, procurement and construction contract with Egypt’s Arab Contractors Company and Elsewedy Electric to build the 2,115MW Rufiji hydroelectric power project in Stiegler’s Gorge. Located within the Selous Game Reserve, a World Heritage Site, the project has been a preoccupation of parts of the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi Party since Tanzania’s founding president Julius Nyerere backed it in the 1970s.
