South African renewables industry unruffled as Eskom flexes its muscles

In an escalation of the long-standing tension over connecting renewable energy independent power producers (REIPPs) to the grid, Eskom has made the unexpected decision to suspend the issuance of grid connection budget quotes until 31 March 2018. Eskom has become increasingly bullish in its tussles with the regulator as it struggles with the financial fallout of delays to its new projects, the 4,764MW Medupi coal power plant, 4,800MW Kusile and the 1,332MW Ingula pumped storage plant.
