South Africa: Eskom reveals commissioning deadlines

Issue 312 - 19 Nov 2015 | 1 minute read

Eskom has pushed back commissioning for the 4,764MW Medupi and 4,800MW Kusile coal power plants by a year. Chief executive Brian Molefe said on 16 November that Medupi would enter full commercial operation in May 2020 and Kusile in September 2022. All four units at the 1,332MW Ingula pumped storage facility will commission between January and July 2017. Eskom had gone 100 days with only two minor load-shedding incidents, he said, although demand remains substantially lower than in 2007 and plant availability is still below the 80% target.
