South Africa’s National Treasury has given Eskom permission to circumvent procurement rules to source coal quickly after the utility confirmed that the 2,100MW Arnot, 1,561MW Camden, 1,893MW Hendrina, 990MW Komati, 3,000MW Kriel, 4,110MW Majuba and 3,654MW Tutuka power plants all had inadequate coal stockpiles. Excluding the Medupi and Kusile megaprojects, which are partially operating, Eskom had a total coal supply of 35 days on 25 April, the utility said in a statement.
