South Africa: BMW launches first commercial biogas plant

Issue 288 - 06 Nov 2014 | 1 minute read

Expected to be South Africa’s first commercially viable biogas-to-power plant, Bio2Watt has signed a ten-year power purchase agreement with BMW South Africa to supply the motor manufacturer’s Rosslyn production facility near Pretoria. The 4.4MW Bronkhorstspruit biogas plant is expected to begin operating in Q1 2015, using waste from Beefcor’s giant Bayview feedlot to generate power to satisfy around 25% of Rosslyn’s requirements. BMW South Africa managing director Tim Abbott said it fitted with “our vision… to achieve a completely carbon-neutral energy supply for the BMW Group… we set ourselves the goal of becoming a leader in the use of renewable energy by 2020”.
