The US Power Africa initiative on 25 August announced a new partnership with the government of Japan focused on reducing energy poverty and increasing access to sustainable energy in sub-Saharan Africa. The US Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Japanese foreign ministry signed a memorandum of cooperation including a Japanese commitment to bring an additional 1,200MW of power to sub-Saharan Africa by end-2018.
