Fundo de Energia (Funae) is inviting bids from consultants to carry out feasibility studies and advise Funae on procurement of eleven solar PV and battery mini-grids in villages across Mozambique. The deadline for submissions is 19 May 2020. The consultancy contract is expected to last 12 months.
The mini-grids are being developed on a public-private partnership. The independent power producer will be responsible for financing, operating and maintaining the generation facilities through power purchase agreements with Electricidade de Moçambique (EdM). Funae will oversee the design and construction of the mini-grids and supervise implementation activities. The distribution network will be owned by EdM and publicly financed but with private contractors for operations and maintenance. Mini-grid customers will be customers of EdM
The mini-grids will be located in the following districts: Muaquia in Majune district, Matondovela and Gomba in Mecula, Meluluca in Lago, Lissiete in Mandimba, Lúrio in Memba, Muze in Zumbo, Malowera in Marrávia, Chinthopo in Mágoe, Bazua in Tambara, and Nguawala in Macossa.
The project is part of the country’s ProEnergia national electrification strategy, which aims to achieve universal access to electricity by 2030. The first phase of the programme has attracted $152m financing, including an $80m grant from the World Bank Group’s International Development Association.
