More disputes following Nigeria’s gubernatorial elections

Legal protests are under way, but in all likelihood president-elect Bola Ahmed Tinubu will take over the Aso Rock Presidential Villa following their inauguration, scheduled for 29 May. More wide ranging protests are expected from the gubernatorial polls, after 28 of 36 state elections were held on 18 March (see Map, below). Many more irregularities were reported in elections that were “worse run” than the presidential poll, but increased devolution was expected, the 21 March AIX online roundtable Nigeria in a period of transition heard.

Governors have been given a bigger role, which means they will be looking to develop more state-level infrastructure and other projects. But with Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation “remitting nothing to the federal account, new governors in most states are coming into office in crisis mode,” one expert said.
