Kenya: Innovative guarantees for Kipeto wind project

The Africa Trade Insurance Agency (ATI), a multilateral investment insurer owned by African member countries and institutional members such as the African Development Bank (AfDB) and Italian export credit agency Sace, is supporting the 102MW Kipeto wind power project with a specially developed guarantee. The guarantee is being implemented on a standalone basis for the US Overseas Private Investment Corporation (Opic), which is lending $233m to the project, and UK-based private equity firm Actis, which is the project sponsor after acquiring a majority stake earlier this year.
