Deals signed during the mid-January visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping to Cairo have reintroduced the prospect that imported coal could play a role in Egypt’s future energy mix. Electricity minister Mohamed Shaker told a news conference that the cabinet had approved conditional contracts with Dongfang Electric Corporation to build a 1,980MW plant, and with Shanghai Electric to build four plants with total capacity of 2,400MW. In total, the Ministry of Electricity signed accords on six power infrastructure projects with the China Export and Credit Insurance Corporation (Sinosure) and the Export-Import Bank of China.
