Djibouti: Doraleh Desalination commissioned

Issue 436 - 15 Apr 2021 - By Marc Howard | 1 minute read

President Ismail Omar Guelleh commissioned the 20MW wind plant that supplies the Doraleh Desalination facility, 5km west of Djibouti City, on 14 March. Energy generated by the plant is used to power the 22,500m3 capacity reverse osmosis facility. The government plans a further upgrade to 45,000m3. The plant was built by France’s Eiffage, which was awarded the contract in August 2017 and will operate it until 2026. The project was financed largely by €73m ($87m) from the European Union, with €5.5m counterpart funding provided by the government.
