Construction of Winch Energy’s solar PV and battery storage mini-grid development on Uganda’s Bunjako Island will be completed by the end of September, Winch Energy country manager for Uganda Alex Wanume tells African Energy Live Data. The three solar PV and battery mini-grids, which will have combined capacity of 128kWp, will bring power to 500 homes and businesses in the villages of Ssenyondo, Buzaami, Bugoma and Bukina on the island, which has a population of 20,000 people.
Wanume said that development had not been significantly impacted by Covid-19-related restrictions as Winch Uganda had successfully lobbied to be designated an essential service provider. However, the Covid-19 lockdown did have an impact upon prospective customers, who have been prevented from wiring their homes and so could not apply for new electricity connections during lockdown. Wanume said that this had slowed down the rate of new connections, but that it anticipated demand recovering swiftly once Uganda’s lockdown eases.
