Tanzania: Symbion holds off ICSID action

Although Symbion Power’s International Commercial Court arbitration over payments for its 120MW Ubungo plant in Tanzania is ongoing – a judgement is anticipated in 2019 – the company has held off pursuing a second case through the World Bank Group’s International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID). The company told the government late last year that if progress was not made by May a second case would be brought. However, Symbion chief executive Paul Hinks told African Energy that “there is renewed hope that an amicable settlement of the dispute can be reached and we want to show Tanesco and the government good faith in that regard”.
