Siemens Gamesa announced on 4 January that it has signed an engineering, procurement and construction contract with Ethiopian Electric Power to build the 100MW Assela wind farm. The contract includes the delivery of 29 SG 3.4-132 wind turbines which are expected to come online Q1 2023. The plant is expected to produce 300,000 MWh/yr electricity at less than €0.09/kWh.
The project is located in the Oromia province between the towns of Adama and Assela, about 150km south of Addis Ababa and will be Siemens’ first project in Ethiopia.
Assela reached financial close on 22 September after Ethiopia’s parliament approved a €117m loan agreement with Danske Bank, backed by the Danish government. Danida Sustainable Infrastructure Finance is providing €95m ($111.7m) for the €146m project, comprising a grant, interest subsidy and loan guarantee. Assela also received a Scaling up Renewable Energy Programme project preparation grant from the African Development Bank.
