Tlou Energy announced on 28 June that a core drilling rig will arrive at the company’s Lesedi and Mamba coal bed methane (CBM) projects next month following lengthy shipping and customs clearing procedures, with drilling of production wells set to begin in Q3. Tlou is bidding in government tenders to develop up to 100MW power using CBM. Although proposals were submitted by Tlou and Sekaname Ltd in September 2017, the government requested in February that both re-tender and the companies are waiting for more information about the process.
The new production wells will be dual lateral wells, intersecting a vertical well and will be located near the proposed central processing facility. Tlou is working with geological and drilling consultants to optimise production well design to enhance flow rates for the wells, which could provide sufficient gas for 2MW power generation. The wells will also help confirm coal quality and thickness as well as gas content in previously undrilled areas of Lesedi and Mamba.
