The technology options proposed to tackle energy poverty and stimulate sustainable economic growth in Africa offer dazzling possibilities. Some are already being deployed or have a realistic chance of success but others threaten to waste large amounts of planners’ and financiers’ time without delivering increased access or new export markets.

This virtual meeting will provide snapshots of emerging renewable and storage technologies, as sector stakeholders share their perspectives and the AIX community asks: which innovations are most technically and financially appropriate for the continent's energy requirements?

  • Energy storage: the game changer? An investors’ perspective
  • Green hydrogen: a huge amount of hype but is H an affordable industry in its green, blue, brown or grey forms?
  • Solar power: from SHS to grid-scale is the age of accelerated technical innovation over? Has PV won over CSP?
  • Clean coal, CCS and other fossil solutions – are they credible?
  • Has gas got a long-term role as the transition fuel?
  • How applicable are renewable energy innovations, including wave energy, floating wind and pv?
  • M-Pesa and other examples of innovations able to meet uniquely African opportunities. Is off-grid the answer?

Panellists include: Tarik Hamane, Executive Director, MASEN; Tord Johnsson, General Manager Strategic Relations and Business, South & East Africa, Wärtsilä Energy; Yassine Benjelloun, Business Development Manager North Africa, DNV GL; Driss Faouzi, Morocco Manager, InnoVent; and Charlie Clark, Investment Associate, AP Ventures
