Following the recently concluded Presidential elections, a new government has been put in place. The new Minister of Energy, Water and Hydrocarbons is Mr. Vonjy ANDRIAMANGA. As the country is taking the necessary steps to face the challenges of electrifying both its rural and urban areas, the government seeks to provide universal electricity access by 2030. Indeed, only 15% of the population had access to electricity in 2016. Investments are needed to reinforce transmission and distribution networks, not only to reduce technical losses, but also to support the further implementation of the national electrification strategy via grid densification.
Madagascar's renewable energy potential remains still unharnessed. If the country is largely betting on solar power technologies (with a potential capacity of 2,000 kWh/m²/year), it has also high wind capacity and biomass resources to contribute to its global electrification. The government also intends to revive the hydropower industry, which has considerable potential, as well as to deploy small solar off grid power plants in rural areas.
Local stakeholders, International Financial Institutions and interested market participants are working together to meet the objective of providing energy access to 70% of Malagasy households by 2030. This means to produce 7,900 GWh by 2030, as opposed to the 1,500 GWh currently produced.
