The creation of national oil company GEPetrol is intended to clean up Equatorial Guinea’s reputation for poor governance, as well as to improve cooperation with IOCs and negotiate a better deal for the government. Oil executives seem convinced of EG’s merits as the very model of a modern Gulf of Guinea hotspot, but questions remain whether President Obiang’s regime can deliver, writes Jon Marks.
