South Africa: Exxaro and GDF Suez plan coal-fired IPP

Issue 259 - 26 Jul 2013 | 1 minute read

Miner Exxaro has announced further involvement with South Africa’s independent power producer (IPP) procurement programme with a 600MW coal power plant built with France’s GDF Suez. GDF Suez responded to the Department of Energy’s request for registration, which closed on 12 July, and the pair are expected to enter the project into the first baseload IPP procurement round. Procurement documents for the round are expected later in the year after the government announced in December that it would procure 2,500MW of coal power from IPPs between 2014 and 2024.
