South Africa: Eskom seeks 15%/yr tariff increase

Issue 379 - 26 Oct 2018 | 3 minute read

Eskom has applied for tariff increases of 15%/yr in the fourth multi-year price determination (MYPD4), which runs from 2019-20 to 2021-22. Around the same time, the utility put in its regulatory clearing account (RCA) application for 2017-18, which allows it to recoup unanticipated but prudently incurred costs. Eskom applied to recover R21,624m ($1.5bn) through the RCA mechanism.Eskom has faced considerable political pushback over tariff increases in recent years and there has been noticeable grid migration, particularly following power cuts in 2015.
