South Africa: Abengoa commissions first solar thermal plant

Issue 296 - 12 Mar 2015 | 1 minute read

A public-private partnership led by Spanish renewable energy developer Abengoa has commissioned South Africa’s first solar thermal plant. The 100MW KaXu Solar One plant, near the town of Pofadder in the Northern Cape, was developed with state-owned financier Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) and the KaXu Community Trust (AE 293/10). Abengoa owns 51% of the project, the IDC 29% and KaXu Community Trust 20%. KaXu’s output will be sold to Eskom under a 20-year power purchase agreement. Abengoa is building South Africa’s first concentrated solar project, near Upington in Northern Cape.
