Renewables developer Red Rocket has announced that its 4MW capacity run-of-river Kruisvallei hydropower plant achieved commercial operations on 25 February 2021. Situated on a 15ha site on the Ash River between Clarens and Bethlehem in Free State, Kruisvallei comprises two separate run-of-river plants, which together generate up to 23GWh/yr. Power production varies throughout the year, as water release from the Lesotho Highlands Water Project fluctuates between 15m3/s and 40m3/s.
