Asis Energy Solutions’ 50MW Kitaka solar PV project in Mozambique was on 27 October selected in solar developer Phanes Group’s first solar incubator programme, which took place at the Unlocking Solar Capital: Africa 2017 event in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. Asis Energy Solutions is headed by Marlon Dos Santos, who will now begin a four-day workshop with Phanes in Dubai, followed by a two-month mentorship programme, with the possibility of Phanes Group codeveloping Kitaka and providing funding to bring the project to financial close.

Three projects were selected as finalists in the programme from submissions with combined capacity of nearly 1GW spread over 15 sub-Saharan countries. The other two projects were the 50MW Akouédo project in Côte d’Ivoire and a 100MW project based in Amhara, Ethiopia. The winner was selected by a panel drawn from law firm Hogan Lovells, French development agency Proparco, responsAbility Investments AG, Rina Consulting, and Solarplaza.

“We are proud and excited to announce Marlon Dos Santos as the recipient of our inaugural solar incubator programme. It was a close match – all the finalists presented high-quality projects with the potential to transform their respective communities”, Phanes chief executive Martin Haupts said. “Not only the corporate social responsibility component of each proposal was the key factor in our evaluation but also the passion of Marlon to bring a project to life in a difficult market where the expertise and the training he will be receiving might be essential to help him to succeed”.
