The signing of power purchase agreements (PPAs) on 22 May for two 40MW solar projects – Voltalia’s Kopere scheme and Rumuruti, which is being developed by Kenergy alongside Scatec Solar and Norfund – and an agreement signed on 16 May between GE and Amu Power, the project company for the 1,050MW Lamu coal power plant, have again highlighted the contradictions of the Kenyan power sector. The solar photovoltaic projects have been delayed for nine months as the government and regulator sought to push the tariff down to $0.08/kWh.
