Environmental groups target the courts and seek to leverage public opinion

The environmental movement in Africa has evolved hugely over the past decade, with pressure groups increasingly influential in politics and the courts. They have been joined by other human rights and social justice campaigners, who increasingly see environmental issues as relevant to their activities.
